and most textbooks.
Academic Profile
The school is not particularly selective, yet
achieves outstanding results at GCSE and
A levels. It regularly comes top of league
tables in Somerset for GCSE results. The
emphasis is on traditional, academically
rigorous subjects, small classes and expert
teaching. The formal, examined curriculum
is enhanced by a far-reaching programme
of enrichment and the school’s philosophy
is to go well beyond what is required
for exams. Independence, curiosity and
genuine scholarship are encouraged in all
ability levels.
Facilities
Apart
from
excellent
boarding
accommodation the school enjoys state-
of-the-art teaching rooms. Particularly
impressive are the languages classrooms,
with a modern digital laboratory and
the science faculty. The sports facilities
are among the best in the region, with
excellent sports halls, an indoor swimming
pool, two all-weather hockey pitches,
netball and tennis courts, a dance studio
and many sports fields for rugby, football,
lacrosse, cricket and athletics.
Drama enjoys a large, very well equipped
theatre and a newly-built 300-seater
amphitheatre. There is a modern music
school, with practice rooms and a small
concert hall. The art school is housed in
a large Victorian villa and boasts a small
gallery for school and other local artists to
exhibit their work.
The new, award-winning library (of 15,000
books) forms a popular focus for the
academic life of the school.
University Destinations
Almost all students go on to university
in the UK, many to highly competitive
institutions to study high-demand subjects
such as medicine. Engineering, history,
the sciences, English, business studies,
economics and languages are also popular
undergraduate courses. About half of the
leavers go onto Russell Group universities.
A growing number of leavers are
considering overseas university options,
including in the Netherlands, the USA,
Germany, Australia and Hong Kong.
Special Features
The school has probably the finest Design
Technology department in the country,
with many students going on to study
engineering at university.
In addition to GCSEs and A levels,
students are able to gain a great many
other qualifications at King’s:
A Leiths Cookery certificate; Duke of
Edinburgh Bronze and Gold; Music
Instrumental Exams; LAMDA Speech and
Drama Certificates; a number of different,
formal sports coaching certificates;
various Microsoft qualifications etc.
Language Support
The school offers an excellent service for
non-native speakers of English in the form
of one-on-one and/or group tuition with
qualified ESL teachers. IELTS and IGCSE
exams are catered for.
Student Profile
The school is keen to accept young men
and women from any background who
can demonstrate the academic and
language skills needed to thrive at GCSE
and A level. A willingness to engage
with the academic, extra-curricular and
pastoral life of the school is important.
Cheerfulness, a good work ethic and an
enthusiastic approach are the hallmarks
of a typical King’s student.
