Wrekin College
NR BIRMINGHAM
Wrekin is over 130 years old, with all the
traditions of an English education. But it
is also a cosmopolitan, vibrant community.
Opportunities abound in music, art, sport,
drama, debating, Combined Cadet Force
and Duke of Edinburgh, as well as many
other activities. However, our focus is
on academic achievement, producing
well-educated and rounded individuals,
with a wealth of skills to enable them to
confidently enter the world of further
education and employment.
Wrekin is:
• a school which every child believes is
‘their school’, and where every child has
an equal chance to contribute
• a school that takes pride in itself, but is
never complacent
• a school where pupils understand that
a first-rate education is a privilege, and
one they have a duty to live up to
• a school which is more than the sum of
its parts, offering everything other great
schools offer and something more – a
Wrekin education
Wrekin College spans 100 acres and
facilities include a dedicated Art School,
Design School, Music School, purpose
built 200-seat theatre, fitness suite,
squash courts, floodlit all-weather
(astroturf) sports pitches, cricket fields,
rugby pitches, tennis and netball courts,
sports halls, gymnasium, six-lane 25m
indoor swimming pool, Fives courts,
indoor rowing facilities, computer suites,
library, Chapel and Sixth Form Centre.
Gymnastics is a particular strength of the
school. Wrekin currently has three GB
junior and senior squadgymnasts, coached
regularly by the BBC commentator and
head coach, Christine Still. We are able
to provide a balance between rigorous
training and academic schedules.
School’s Unique Selling Point
Wrekin has also launched its own
Business School, providing pupils with an
environment in which they can immerse
themselves in the world of business.
This practical component, supported
by real companies and entrepreneurs,
complements the academic aspects of
their studies. Accountancy, Business
Studies, Economics and Psychology are
taught exclusively in the Business School.
Academic Profile
Wrekin has a strong academic record. We
pride ourselves on stimulating intellectual
curiosity, providing excellent and inspiring
teaching, and making learning exciting.
Our guiding principle is to help every child
achieve the most they are capable of,
prepare them for the competitive world
they will enter, and give them a lasting
sense of the pleasure and value of learning
to enrich their future lives.
Wrekin College is a non-selective school
but we are ranked ‘outstanding’ and in the
top 6% nationally for added value by ALPS.
ALPS is a system that allows schools to
get a measure of the value they add to a
pupil’s A level performance compared to
what might be expected of them following
their previous academic performance at
GCSE. This is where Wrekin truly shines.
We celebrate the academic success of all
our pupils.
