St Richard’s
BROMYARD
StRichard’s isaco-educational preparatory
school. St Richard’s aim to give all pupils
a sense of their personal worth and the
value of family and community within a
stimulating and supportive environment.
Excellent academic standards are
achieved through child-centred teaching,
in small classes, where a love of learning is
nurtured and pupils can gain confidence
in their own ability to think for themselves.
The broad academic, sporting and
artistic curriculum of which St Richard’s
is so proud, produces happy, confident,
responsible children which makes them
so sought after by leading public schools
across the country.
The school
The lively and homely atmosphere within a
traditional rural setting, St Richard’s forms
the foundation on which the children
thrive; it is here that life-long friendships
are kindled, good manners are intrinsically
learnt, appreciation for the surroundings
engendered and basic Christian values are
founded. Emphasis is placed not solely
on learning but on enjoying and playing
too; the creative aspects of the school
and the wide variety of sport played,
combined with the academic learning,
create an environment where children find
it stimulating and rewarding to work. At
St Richard’s children can be children while
essentially benefitting from all that is on
offer to them.
Academics
Academics at St Richard’s are crucial
and the standards are high. Children are
carefully nurtured and encouraged so that
they want to and do give their best. All the
traditional curriculum subjects are covered
as well as one or two more diverse subjects
such as Latin, which is compulsory, and
Greek, optional. Exams are taken towards
the end of the Michaelmas and Summer
Terms in all academic subjects. Parents
are kept informed of their child’s progress
by three mid-term assessments for both
effort and achievement on behalf of the
child. Regular formal parents’ evenings
are arranged whereby the parents are
invited to the school to meet their child’s
teachers and parents are also welcome
to arrange an appointment to meet a
member of staff if required.
The
varied
academic
curriculum
prepares children well for their entrance
examination, or common entrance, to
their senior school. St Richard’s has an
excellent track-record for children going
on to their first choice in senior school,
with many achieving an academic, sport,
music, drama or all-rounder scholarship.
A system of streaming within the school
ensures that children progress as fast as
they are able, commensurate with their
abilities.
Extra curricula activites
The size also means every child is noticed
and encouraged: 100% of children play
in sports matches and have parts in
drama productions, and over 75% play
musical instruments. Activities such
as riding, kayaking, learning Mandarin,
cookery, dance, orienteering, gardening,
photography, film-making and chess are
all available, with all these contributing to
the children’s all round preparation and
success. All of this takes place in 35 acres
of glorious Herefordshire countryside.
Leavers
Recent leavers have won places to,
amongst others: Ampleforth, Eton College,
Rugby School, Moreton Hall, Shrewsbury
School, St Mary’s, Ascot, Tudor Hall and
