Port Regis
SHAFTESBURY
Port Regis is one of the most popular co-
educational prep schools in England and
boasts some outstanding facilities. HRH
Princess Anne, whose children Zara and
Peter attended the school, opened the
Jowett Sports Hall in 1980 and ten years
later Queen Elizabeth II opened Queen’s
Hall.
Port Regis is highly regarded for its
academic, sporting and extra-curricular
successes, and these are clearly important
aspects of what the school sets out to do.
2014 became another record-breaking
year with the leavers gaining twenty-eight
scholarships to their senior schools. These
have included a top Music Scholarship to
Eton, and Academic Awards to Bryanston,
Marlborough and Sherborne Girls’ School.
Endeavour in the Design and Technology
studios has led to four Design Scholarships
while six Sports Scholarships, and
scholarships for ICT, Art and All-Rounder
achievement demonstrate wider extra-
curricular successes.
One must remember, however, that
academic success comes in all shapes
and sizes. The thriving Learning Support
Department helps children overcome
difficulties in individual subjects with a
clear contribution to the overall academic
success of the school. None of this
could be achieved without happy and
well-motivated children and is the most
fundamental aspect of the education
provided.
Port Regis aims to equip children not only
with good grades and important academic
skills, but also with qualities of character
to see them through their lives beyond
school. The most significant goal at Port
Regis is that children should learn how
to acquire a perspective on life, allowing
them to feel at ease with themselves,
their fellows, their teachers and their
families. The school focuses in particular
on five values: Hospitality, Perseverance,
Reconciliation, Generosity and Respect
and puts these values for life at the heart
of everything in the school.
Academic
The school’s academic curriculum covers
all those subjects required by the top
senior schools: English, Mathematics,
Science, French or Spanish, Geography,
History, Religious Studies and Latin.
Pupils pursue those subjects to Common
Entrance or Scholarship level in setted
groups. The Headmaster and other senior
members of staff advise parents on how
to choose an appropriate senior school
for their child and a great deal of time and
effort is spent making sure that the right
choice is made.
But of course parents choose Port Regis
for more than just the academic record.
When it comes to music, sport, drama,
craft, design and technology, they have
a reputation for excellence thanks to
their outstanding range of facilities and
highly qualified and dedicated teaching
staff. As the most recent ISI report states,
‘teaching is excellent overall. The school
achieves its aim to encourage each child
to gain benefit from a first-class staff, not
least through the willingness of teachers
to make themselves available when help
is needed’.
The beautiful Dorset setting and
departmental provision mean that the
school attracts the best teachers from all
over the country, a number of whom have
left positions at prestigious senior schools
to come to live and work at Port Regis. No
fewer than twelve members of academic
staff hold qualifications from Oxford or
Cambridge and around 15% of Port Regis
alumni go on to receive an offer to study
at one of those two ancient universities.
